Give Development Builds a Recognizable Icon

Icon Editor helps you make a placeholder icon for development, testing, demos, and project identity. It's handy while your final artwork is still a work in progress, or when you want test builds to be easy to tell apart.

Open Design placeholder icon from Build, or use the icon options in your project's setup.

Choose the Main Image

Select the platforms you need, choose a starting theme, then click the icon preview to pick an SF Symbol, emoji, or your own PNG or JPEG image.

Start with a shape you can recognize at a small size. The editor preview gives you plenty of room to work, but the icon also needs to make sense in a Dock, app grid, or list.

Your own image is useful when you already have part of a design and just want to play around with backgrounds or positioning.

Adjust the Appearance

Choose background colors and a gradient angle, then add a pattern if it helps. Pattern color, opacity, and scale let you keep the detail subtle.

Adjust the foreground image's size, color, rotation, and position, along with weight where supported. Shadows and glow can add separation, but keep the main shape easy to read.

A badge can help you spot a development build or variation. Add a short label, choose its style and color, and position it where it doesn't cover up the image.

Use or Export the Result

Saving lets you use the icon for the current Kickstart project or export assets for the selected platforms. Applying an icon inside Kickstart doesn't replace your production app's asset catalog.

Read the license notice shown before saving. The built-in SF Symbol and Apple Emoji options here are intended for development and testing; prepare appropriate final artwork for your store release.

Try a few simple variations before piling on lots of detail. A clear silhouette and a useful color combination will usually survive small sizes better than a busy design.
